Red Lodge Alpine Trip

Even though there were insufficient registrants for a bus, 12 skiers arranged to car pool, with the result that the 26th annual alpine ski trip to Red Lodge, Montana went ahead. This allowed the various groups to depart and return when they wished. To sum up the ski and weather conditions in a word? CONTRASTS!! (see photos) March 17th - Sunny, warm in the morning, snow crunchy, then softening. Afternoon, temperature rising to 19 F. Clothing off in an effort not to overheat, snow very soft up top, slush at the bottom. March 18th - Morning, snow begins and continues until mid-afternoon…clearing. Temperature mild. Evening, snowing, overnight, snowing. March 19th - Still snowing - a total of 21 inches, yes, 21 INCHES of snow!! This was a unique experience to put it mildly. It was like…skiing on pillows, falling into deep piles of marshmallows, being human snow ploughs. The funniest part for me was listening to the exclamations of everyone as they navigated the slopes, especially early in the day. Impossible not to laugh, grunt, groan, exclaim and generally share with complete strangers the wonder of it all. March 20th - It's Saturday, the crowds are out, the slopes have been groomed, it's sunny, conditions excellent, as usual!! Of course our evening socializing was excellent, telling stories, enjoying fine Montana refreshments and replenishing our caloric reserves. Some of us are thinking that next year, we could try Whitefish, Montana. Any takers??
